Why people come to this corner of Birbhum

Some guests are already on the road for Santiniketan’s arts and memory. Some come from Kolkata with a wish for diksha, puja, or a quiet sitting. Some are neighbours of Kopai who already know the courtyard. All are received as guests of a Guru’s household.

The region has its own spiritual weather: Shakta shrines, Baul song, paddy, laterite, and the cultural history of Visva-Bharati. How to arrange the day

Kali Puja in 2026 is 8 November, Dipanvita Amavasya, 21 Kartik 1433 — a night when many households in Bengal will be moving, so a confirmed welcome matters even more.

Say who is coming, whether children are with you, and whether you hope to sit for kirtan, offer seva, walk toward diksha, or simply greet the shrine. Diksha is a personal transmission received directly from the Guru; contact the Ashram to begin the conversation. A first visit can be only a greeting. That too is complete.

Wear modest clothing suitable for a temple courtyard and village paths. Carry the courtesy of removing shoes where you are asked, of asking before photographs, and of eating what is offered as prasad. If you have time, read a little of Gujhya Gyan so the words of the house are not entirely new.

A day at the Ashram has its own article in this journal; the short version is household life. Morning care of the shrine. Kitchen. Rest by the pond in the heat. Evening lamps and Nama. Guest kirtan has included Padma Shri Purna Das Baul and Kirtan Samrat Suman Bhattacharya; most evenings are the Ashram’s own singing, including the devotion of the album Charan Dasi.

Seva may find you: vegetables, cloth, cows. Clothing seva on Guruma’s advent tithi is documented for 13 May 2024 and 29 April 2025. You may arrive on an ordinary Wednesday and still be useful. Usefulness is a fine souvenir.
