The last watch of Pitru Paksha closes. The first light of Devi Paksha burns at the Ashram in Gopikantapur. This dawn is the dawn of the Chandipath — the mouth of Durga Paksha.

1. 

   Lamps at the door

   Today is Mahalaya, Ashwin Amavasya. Remembrance of Pitru Paksha comes to rest, and the first watch of Devi Paksha opens. Marigold and oil lamps burn at the Ashram door. Subho Mahalaya.

2. 

   The radiance of the devas

   Mahishasura's pride rises over heaven. The devas gather on the Himalayan peak. Each one's radiance joins one fire — the fire that still burns in the Ashram homa.

3. 

   Chandika appears

   From that gathered light, Durga Chandika takes form. Her arms reach the ten directions. The lion is her mount. In the Ashram shrine, Maa Kali's face is awake this dawn — in garlands, gold, and hibiscus.

4. 

   Weapons and ornaments

   Shiva gives the trident, Vishnu the discus, Indra the thunderbolt, Agni the shakti, Yama the staff, Varuna the noose, Vayu the bow. The devas place ornaments and weapons in the Mother's hands. At the Ashram she is dressed with lamps, flowers, and the scythe of the shrine.

5. 

   The battle through the night

   Mahishasura takes the forms of buffalo, lion, elephant, and man. The Mother stands before every form. Through the night the homa fire keeps the memory of that battle. Guruji and Guruma tend that fire on the temple terrace.

6. 

   Ya Devi sarvabhuteshu

   The buffalo falls. The devas sing the hymn. Ya Devi sarvabhuteshu shakti-rupena samsthita. This dawn of the Chandipath is Mahalaya at the Ashram. The scripture lies open beside the homa.

7. 

   Namaskar of the house

   Guruma Minakshi Devyomba sits in namaskar beside the Mother. Lamps and hibiscus dress the shrine. This namaskar is the first namaskar of Durga Paksha.

8. 

   The mouth of Durga Paksha
